To Kindergarten or Not to Kindergarten

That is the question...

Dylan has a early September birthday.

This makes him five in the fall but just BARELY five.

Depending on the state, the cut-off for kindergarten is either September 1 ( No kindergarten for Dylan) or September 30 ( possibly kindergarten).

If we matched at our top choice the cut-off is September 1. He'll miss it by 9 days. Every friend I have who is a teacher tells me that with boys, especially, they can only benefit from starting a year later.

I was very much in favor of this thinking until a few weeks ago when our not even 4.5 year old started reading. All by himself.

One day he just started reading. He sounded out words on signs, in the books we were reading, on bottles in the fridge.

We asked his preschool teachers if they have been focusing on reading. Beyond sight words she told us that they really don't focus on the mechanics of phonetically reading yet. This was just something he was ready to do himself. And his enthusiasm for reading is off the charts. He wants to read everything.

With all this my brain tells me that I don't want to lose this enthusiasm by backtracking for a year, but my gut still tells me that he can only benefit from more time. Plus it gives US time to make sure with this move we are in a good school district.

Plus, i'm not ready to be the mother of a kindergartner yet.
