Classic Tennessee Moments:
U-Haul
We finally unload the u-haul in time to get it back to the Uhaul place before closing and hop in the car for our first interaction with the locals. As we pull up there are 3 men sitting outside the garage. One is sporting an honest to goodness mullet and trucker's cap. One is selling watermelons out the back of his pick-up and one appears as if he might work there, because he's wearing a uhaul orange Tuffy T.
Craig goes in to do the returning of the truck business and i sit out side with Dylan. We are entertained as Watermelon Man decides that "this one is on the house" and throws the gigantic fruit onto the ground so Mullet Man and U-Haul Tuffy T Dude can pick up the peices and have a snack! After U-Haul Tuffy T finishes his smashed up watermelon he goes inside to attend to Craig. They do the whole inspect the truck thing and then craig pays and Tuffy T says in the thickest southern drawl you'll ever hear, "Well, You'll get that there receipt on the internet." Craig says, "Like in my email?" And Tuffy T responds, "Yeah, email, that's it."
Imploding McDonalds.
So i'm not sure we were aware of this before we left for the South or not, but Iced Coffee is a complete puzzle to every southern person we've met so far. Our first attempt was at a legit coffee house in town. We had HIGH hopes because its a brandnew establishment. They have wi-fi for goodness sake! Only when we asked for iced coffee the owner says. "Well, I got some icecubes in the back!" while reaching for his pot of hot coffee.
On our second attempt we were feeling very encouraged because McDonalds is a chain. I mean they HAVE to serve the same stuff in Tennessee that they do in Massachusettes...isn't that a law? So craig goes in and orders one iced coffee black and one small with skim milk and the girl behind the counter says, "huh?".
Craig responds, "Iced Coffee, black." And the order girl looks to fill the order girl who says, " Black? You mean nothin' in it? We usually put cream in that."
"I just don't want anything in the large." Craig said, as the line behind him grew and grew.
"Black huh? That's the first time I've heard that!" she giggled. "And what about the other one?"
"Just skim milk, do you have skim milk?"
"Um, that's what we put in our mocha's, i think?"
As the line was busting out the door, Craig decided to just take the two coffees with cream and leave. I mean, at least they were iced coffees.
"

I only wish that the Adventures of Tuffy T, Watermelon Man and Mullett Man could be a series! Imagine the possibilities!!! OMG you could PUBLISH those adventures.
ReplyDeleteSoutherners are brought up to drink Sweet Tea, lemonade and Mint Juleps. They don't get iced coffee.
Hahaha...it's not just the South...we have had the same problem all over the west coast! Apparently East Coast people are the only ones that don't think coffee is just a vehicle for cream!
ReplyDeleteHi Sweetie! Susie forwarded me your blog. I loved these stories. Just go for the sweet tea! I usually ask for half and half so it is not cavity-causing sweet. :) The thought of cream in my coffee horrifies me. You can see the oil-slick puddles on top. Did you drink it anyway? :O)
