So today my husband has his first "OSCE" or Objective Structured Clinical Examination. In laymen's terms he's going to pretend to be a doctor today! At 4pm he will enter our clinic here in the building and waiting for him in one of the exam rooms will be a Standardized Patient. (That's a real person whose job is to pretend to be sick.) It will be Craig's job to take a personal history, examine the eyes, nose, mouth and ears and give the person a diagnosis and plan to get better!
Besides having the element of the unknown ( who will this standardized patient be?) All of the OSCE's are recorded and will be assessed by his professors! Talk about nerve wracking. I mean they've only learned like THREE things that can be wrong with a human at this point, so its not like he's having to diagnose a rare disease or anything, but its the first time since the start of his school year that he's had to assume the roll of a doctor!
The really scary freaky icky thing is that by the END of the semester he will be doing more than looking in someone's ear or listening to hearts during the OSCE, he'll be performing pelvic exams and prostate tests on REAL humans!
I mean I guess they have to learn all this eventually..but wow.
